electrical mains power tools

 what is a mains-powered tool?
Mains electricity is the general-purpose alternating-current electric power supply. In New Zealand, the Mains voltage is 230V. Which is an a.c. (Alternate Current) This means that the current is constantly changing direction. Mains powered tools are the tools that can only be used Mains power.

Give three examples of a mains power tool?
Grinder
impact drill
circular saw

What is a task the tool is used for?
grinder: can be used for cutting up long pieces of a bar or used as a sander to give the metal a shiny finish.
impact drill: used to drill holes in things like strong metals and concrete.
circular saw: A circular saw is a power-saw using a toothed or abrasive disc or blade to cut different materials using a rotary motion.
  • A circular saw is a tool for cutting many materials such as wood, masonry, plastic, or metal and may be hand-held or mounted to a machine.

General safety around electricity?
check for any exposed wires
keep the cord out of any water
disconnect the cord when finished
if a fault is found report it to the person in charge

what is an "RCD"?
A residual-current device, or residual-current circuit breaker, is a device that quickly breaks an electrical circuit to prevent serious harm from an ongoing electric shock. it can save your life.

What is meant by double insulation?
Double insulation is an insulation that consists of both basic insulation and supplementary insulation. Equipment such as hand-held domestic electric drilling machines has the additional safety precaution of double insulation.

hydraulic tools

 What are hydraulic tools?

Hydraulic machines use liquid fluid power to perform work. Heavy construction vehicles are a common example. In this type of machine, hydraulic fluid is pumped to various hydraulic motors and hydraulic cylinders throughout the machine and becomes pressurized according to the resistance present.

How do they work?

Hydraulic systems use the pump to push hydraulic fluid through the system to create fluid power. The fluid passes through the valves and flows to the cylinder where the hydraulic energy converts back into mechanical energy. The valves help to direct the flow of the liquid and relieve pressure when needed.

What safety precautions to you need to take?

Always wear safety goggles and protective clothing when using hydraulic equipment. Every jack or ram, whether used individually or in a system, should be completely supported on a solid, firm, non-sliding foundation capable of supporting the load.

How do you maintain them?

To combat dirt and contamination, make sure you follow these preventive maintenance steps. Brush and wipe clean all hydraulic connections before you insert them into a hydraulic pump or remote head. Always use fibre brushes when cleaning your hydraulic tools—never metal-bristled brushes.

Give three examples of hydraulic tools in the workshop (you are likely to come across?)

air tools

 what is a pneumatic tool?

A pneumatic tool, air tool, air-powered tool or pneumatic-powered tool is a type of power tool, driven by compressed air supplied by an air compressor. Pneumatic tools can also be driven by compressed carbon dioxide stored in small cylinders allowing for portability.

what is an air compressor?

A compressor is a mechanical device that increases the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume. An air compressor is a specific type of gas compressor. Compressors are similar to pumps: both increase the pressure on a fluid and both can transport the fluid through a pipe.

This is a diagram showing all the parts of an air compressor.

This compressor is a portable single-stage air compressor.
